Looking for a healthier way to beat the heat this summer? Smoothies are the perfect fit! They give you the same cold, creamy texture as a milkshake while helping you get in some nutrients from the fruits and vegetables. You can experiment with different combinations and find something you truly enjoy that will make you feel good this summer!
For a basic smoothie, you’ll want to choose 2 to 3 cups of fruit or vegetables, 1 to 1 ½ cups of liquid, and ½ cup of a thickener. You put all of that into your blender. Blend until everything is mixed and it’s your desired consistency. It’s that easy! But there are a few tips that will make it easier.
Many home blenders have a hard time breaking up frozen fruit and vegetables. So you may want to use fresh and add some ice. Keep in mind that the ice will make it a little watery. However, frozen fruit gives you more of a milkshake texture, which is nice. You may want to consider purchasing a commercial-grade blender if you find you like making smoothies at home.
Use any combination of fruit and vegetables that sounds good to you! If you prefer fruit-only, try mixed berry or strawberry banana for a classic flavor. But don’t be afraid to mix it up! Some suggestions are mango and spinach, pineapple banana, or cucumber and strawberry.
For the liquid, you can use juice, milk, nut milks, or even coconut water. Yogurt is a great thickener, but you can also use kefir, coconut cream, or avocado. Think about flavors you like combined in other dishes and then replicate it in your smoothie! You’ll have a blast trying different combinations.
