Planting A Garden - A Hobby For Your Health

August 10, 2016

Miller Meadows is a manufactured housing community for the young at heart age 55 and over. Located in Spanish Fork, Utah, Miller Meadows is a friendly neighborhood where seniors can enjoy their retirement years and maintain an independent lifestyle. Our homes are attractive and affordable and provide a comfortable place to go about your daily interests, including growing a flower or vegetable garden. Gardening is a great way to eliminate stress and get a little light exercise. And the fresh harvest will bring a delicious way to bring healthy food to the table.

Many seniors find that raised garden beds are much easier to use as they minimize much of the kneeling and bending of traditional gardening. You may also wish to amend the soil with fertilizers or compost to enrich and provide more nutrients. Consider the new trend of companion plantings to maximize your results and minimize problems. For instance, Cauliflower and cabbage work well near Brussels sprouts and broccoli which can repel insects such as cabbage flies. A row of dill planted near your cabbage  may improve both growth and flavor of the cabbage. Companion planting is a relatively new practice that was developed to both prevent specific insects and to inhibit the growth of certain weeds and undesirable plants.

Some other combinations you might want to try are: Potatoes, cucumbers, or soybeans planted near corn, will help repel cinch bugs, and you may successfully keep earwigs away from the your corn crop by planting marigolds nearby. Chives will improve the flavor and growth of tomatoes and peas and also help to deter aphids and Japanese beetles; Plant potatoes or marigolds near bush beans to repel Mexican bean beetles; Radishes will encourage a summer lettuce that is more tender, and the peppery and edible blossoms of the nasturtium will improve the flavor of radishes; Planting sage (the herb) throughout the garden will discourage moths: and onions will deter most pests, especially maggots.

Try a few of these companion plants as you go about in your garden this year, whether at Miller Meadows or elsewhere. Miller Meadows has homes for sale and we also have move-in ready lots available for those who already own a manufactured home, but would like to upgrade to a nicer neighborhood.
